After two recent snowstorms and ongoing freezing temperatures, our county continues to struggle to effectively clear all roads. Many neighborhood streets remain unplowed, causing frustration and disruptions for residents and businesses.
I have received many calls from citizens stuck in their homes, and have personally mobilized county crews and my own campaign volunteers to dig them out.
To our citizens and business owners, your concerns are valid, and you deserve timely and effective snow removal, as well as prompt responses to your requests for help.
As someone who began his career as a county employee performing snow removal, I know firsthand the dedication and tireless efforts of our crews. But despite their hard work, factors such as equipment and severe weather conditions — including unusually low temperatures that reduced the effectiveness of traditional de-icing methods — have contributed to these difficulties.
I appreciate the actions being taken by the county to redouble their efforts, such as the purchase of a new de-icing compound designed for colder temperatures.
As your County Executive, I will ensure that our snow removal operations are fully supported and well-equipped to handle future storms. I will lead a thorough review of current procedures, invest in modern equipment, prioritize filling vacancies in the Department of Public Works and Transportation, and develop contingency plans to better respond to extreme conditions.
Thank you for your patience and understanding through this frustrating period. Together, we will make Prince George’s County stronger and more resilient.
— Prince George’s County Council Member-At-Large Calvin Hawkins, candidate for Prince George’s County Executive
