December 2, 2024 - Statement from Prince George’s County Council Member at Large, Calvin Hawkins
“Today marks a significant moment in Prince George’s County as our County Executive, Angela Alsobrooks, has resigned to continue her dedicated service as Maryland’s newly elected United States Senator. Thank you, Senator-elect Alsobrooks, for running a campaign that reflected the best of Prince George’s and inspired our entire state during this time of transition for our nation.
Senator-elect Alsobrooks leaves a legacy of leadership that has positioned Prince George’s for continued prosperity. To build on this progress, we need new leadership with deep experience in government and a proven record of centering the voices of communities. That is why I have decided to run for Prince George’s County Executive. I am confident that my 30 years of experience in county government has prepared me for this awesome responsibility.
As an emergency management leader, I worked to safeguard our neighborhoods and
strengthen their resilience. As a senior advisor to past county executives, I helped guide Prince George’s historic growth and as County Council Chair, I made sure local businesses survived and renters stayed in their homes during the COVID-19 pandemic. I also helped expand access to community health care, eliminate food deserts in underserved neighborhoods and passed funding for new schools.
I envision a Prince George’s County where we embrace local business owners, faith
communities and nonprofit organizations as true partners in creating opportunities for everyone to thrive. This will start with education, ensuring our schools have world-class resources to produce equitable opportunities for every child. We will nurture high-performing students as an investment in the county’s future and an important part of addressing public safety concerns.
We will prioritize the welfare of our seniors by addressing the lack of affordable housing and
continuing to expand their access to quality care. And we will attract economic development that drives the region’s vibrant economy while uplifting local businesses so that they are not left out.
I will put the people first, from educators to entrepreneurs and our re-entering citizens, actively engaging our diverse county to understand everyone’s needs. I strongly believe that our strength lies within the questions we ask and the conversations we have. Prince George’s
County needs a leader with a proven record of listening – at people’s doorsteps, on the phone, at the supermarket -- so we can forge a path forward that works for everyone.
I am honored to stand as the People’s Choice, ready to lead with experience, stability and a
home-grown commitment to Prince George’s County. Let’s move forward together, building a brighter future for all.”
