Calvin Hawkins Asserts Himself as the Frontrunner During ABC7/WJLA-TV Debate

ARLINGTON, VA, February 13, 2025—Council Member Calvin Hawkins, a candidate for Prince George’s County Executive, confidently positioned himself as the frontrunner in the highly anticipated Prince George’s County Executive Democratic Debate held on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at 7:00 p.m on ABC7/WJLA-TV. During the debate, Hawkins highlighted his extensive 30 years of government experience, emphasizing how it uniquely qualifies him to lead the county effectively. He underscored the significance of his endorsement from former Prince George’s County Executive and current U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, which he believes solidifies him as a strong contender in the race.

“For the last 30 years, I’ve been involved with Prince George’s County [government] – whether it's at your doorstep, in your living room, seeing you at the grocery store or a community meeting. I will be ready on day one, March 4th, to lead. I am the only person endorsed by our beloved former County Executive [Angela Alsobrooks] who said, 'Calvin Hawkins is the person that can lead our county [and move it forward],’” Prince George’s Council Member Calvin Hawkins said.

The debate, moderated by journalism veteran and ABC7/WJLA-TV Maryland Bureau Chief Brad Bell, covered pressing issues that resonate with many Prince George’s County residents, including education, public safety, employment, housing, county budgets, economic development, and immigration policies. Council Member Hawkins did not shy away from these critical topics, addressing each with clarity and conviction.

On the topic of education and immigration, Hawkins expressed his commitment to ensuring that schools remain safe places for all students, particularly for immigrant children. “I will continue to support policies that are fair for immigrants, especially our students. We want them to know that our schools remain a safe haven for them. And that they do not have to worry about ICE officials coming to take them out of class. We will continue to work with our school system to make sure those individuals are not removed from schools,” emphasized Hawkins.

As the debate progressed, Council Member Hawkins's responses resonated with his passion for Prince George’s County. He reiterated his dedication to fostering a community that prioritizes inclusivity, safety, and opportunity for its residents.

With early voting approaching (March 4th), Hawkins continues to advocate for a vision of Prince George’s County that embraces progress while maintaining the values of compassion and support for all residents.
