MEET CALVIN

Early Life and Education.

Calvin Hawkins was raised in the Glassmanor community in Oxon Hill, Prince George’s County, Maryland. Growing up, he witnessed his parents’ dedication to public service through their jobs as a chauffeur and secretary to elected officials. This early exposure to politics and community service profoundly influenced his lifelong commitment to serving others. Hawkins attended Bowie State University, where he became a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. and was an active student leader and advocate.

Career Beginnings.

Calvin cites much of his focus later in life to early mistakes that led to his incarceration. He recalls being motivated to be a better father to his daughter, Tori which led him to turning his life around upon re-entering society. Hawkins began working with at-risk youth, focusing on steering them away from criminal activity and toward productive lives. His dedication to youth development eventually led to opportunities to work as an aide to prominent regional leaders, including former County Executive Wayne Curry. Over three decades, Hawkins gained extensive experience in public service, learning the intricacies of government operations and community leadership.

In 2018, Hawkins launched a campaign for the Prince George’s County Council At-Large seat and won. His election marked the beginning of his direct role in shaping county policies and initiatives. His ability to unite stakeholders and drive impactful policies quickly earned him recognition. By 2020, Hawkins was elected Chair of the County Council, a role he was re-elected to in 2022.

Policy Achievements.

Throughout his tenure, Councilmember Calvin Hawkins has held pivotal committee roles and led several transformative initiatives:

  1. Health, Human Services, and Public Safety (2019-2023):
    As Chair of the Health, Human Services, and Public Safety Committee, Hawkins worked to strengthen emergency response systems and foster collaboration between healthcare providers, law enforcement, and social services. His efforts improved community health and safety preparedness.

     

  2. Re-Entry Advisory Board Leadership (2020-2023):
    Hawkins spearheaded the creation of the Re-Entry Advisory Board to support the reintegration of formerly incarcerated individuals. This initiative connected returning citizens with vital services and resources, promoting equity and reducing recidivism rates.

     

  3. Zoning Reform and Development Policy (2018-2022):
    Hawkins played a key role in modernizing Prince George’s County’s outdated zoning codes. His work promoted transit-oriented and mixed-use developments, fostering economic growth while preserving the county’s community character.

     

  4. School Infrastructure Investments (2021):
    Hawkins advocated for significant investments in educational infrastructure, leading to the construction of 14 new schools to alleviate overcrowding and expand educational opportunities for the county’s youth.

     

  5. Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (2019-2023):
    As part of the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, Hawkins emphasized fiscal responsibility and transparency. His efforts enhanced the county’s resource allocation strategies and reinforced public trust in local government.
